THUS have I heard:

Once the Exalted One was staying near Sāvatthī at Jeta Grove, in Anāthapiṇḍika's Park.

Then the venerable Ānanda came to see the Exalted One ... and the Exalted One said this to him:

(Here he asks the same question, and Ānanda replies:)

'For us, lord, things have their root in the Exalted One... .'

(Then the Buddha repeats the whole of the previous sutta.)
