THUS have I heard:

Once the Exalted One was staying near Sāvatthī,
at Jeta Grove,
in Anāthapiṇḍika's Park.

Then the Exalted One addressed the monks,
saying:

"Monks."

"Yes, lord," replied those monks to the Exalted One.

The Exalted One said:

"There are these three feelings, monks.¹

What three?

Feeling that is pleasant,
feeling that is painful,
feeling [20] that is neither pleasant nor painful.

These are the three feelings.

By the comprehension, monks,
of these three feelings
the Ariyan eightfold way must be cultivated.

What Ariyan eightfold way?

That which is right view,
right aim,
right speech,
right action,
right living,
right effort,
right mindfulness
right concentration.

By the comprehension
of these three feelings
the Ariyan eightfold way must be cultivated.
