Sutta 6
Aññataro Bhikkhu Suttaṁ
A Certain Monk (a)
THUS have I heard:
Once the Exalted One was staying near Sāvatthī.
Then a certain monk came to visit the Exalted One
saluted him
and sat down at one side.
Seated at one side
that monk said this to the Exalted One:
"'The holy life!|| ||
The holy life!'
Lord, is the saying.
Pray, lord, what is the holy life,
and what the ending of the holy life?"
"The holy life, monk,
is just this Ariyan eightfold way;
to wit:
right view,
right aim,
right speech,
right action,
right living,
right effort,
right mindfulness,
right concentration.
Whatsoever destroys lust,
destroys hatred,
destroys illusion, monk,
is this holy life."
