Thus have I heard:

The Exalted One once addressed the brethren, saying:

"Brethren."

"Lord," responded those brethren to the Exalted One.

The Exalted One thus spoke:

"There are these three feelings, brethren.

What three?

Feeling that is pleasant,
feeling that is painful,
and feeling that is neither pleasant nor painful.

These, Brethren, are the three feelings.

Pleasure or pain or feeling that is neither,
The inner and the outer, all that's felt -
He knows it to be ill. He sees the world
False,¹ perishable.² He sees, by contact with it,³
That it is transient, and frees himself.⁴
