The Destruction of the Lure (i)¹

Thus have I heard:

The Exalted One was once staying near Sāvatthī, at Jeta Grove, in Anāthapiṇḍika's, Park.

Then the Exalted One addressed the brethren, saying:

"Brethren."

"Lord," responded those brethren to the Exalted One.

The Exalted One thus spoke:

"Brethren, when a brother sees that the eye is impermanent,
he, rightly perceiving
'this is the right view,'
is repelled thereby.

By the destruction of the lure of lust
comes the destruction of lust.

By the destruction of lust
comes the destruction of the lure.

By this destruction of the lure
the heart is set free,
and it is called
'well-freed.'²

"When a brother sees that the ear is impermanent,
he, rightly perceiving
'this is the right view,'
is repelled thereby.

By the destruction of the lure of lust
comes the destruction of lust.

By the destruction of lust
comes the destruction of the lure.

By this destruction of the lure
the heart is set free,

'well-freed.'
