Thus have I heard:

Once the Exalted One addressed the brethren, saying:

"Brethren."

"Lord," responded those brethren to the Exalted One.

The Exalted One thus spoke:

"Brethren, if the Wanderers who hold other views
should thus question you:

'What is it, friend,
for which the righteous life is lived
under Gotama the recluse?

Thus questioned, Brethren,
thus should ye explain it
to those Wanderers who hold other views: -

'It is for the full understanding of ill, friend,
that the righteous life is lived
under Gotama the recluse.'

And if, Brethren, those Wanderers question you further:

'What is that ill, friend,
fully to understand which
the righteous life is lived
under Gotama the recluse?'

thus questioned,
thus should ye explain it to them: -

'The eye, friend, is ill.

For fully understanding that,
the righteous life is lived.

Objects, friend, are ill.

For fully understanding that,
the righteous life is lived.

Eye-consciousness, friend, is ill.

For fully understanding that,
the righteous life is lived.

Eye-contact, friend, is ill.

For fully understanding that,
the righteous life is lived.

The weal or woe or neutral states experienced
that arise owing to eye-contact, -
those also are ill.

For fully understanding that,
the righteous life is lived.

'The ear, friend, is ill.

For fully understanding that,
the righteous life is lived.

Sounds, friend, are ill.

For fully understanding that,
the righteous life is lived.

Ear-consciousness, friend, is ill.

For fully understanding that,
the righteous life is lived.

Ear-contact, friend, is ill.

For fully understanding that,
the righteous life is lived.

The weal or woe or neutral states experienced
that arise owing to ear-contact, -
those also are ill.

For fully understanding that,
the righteous life is lived.

'The nose, friend, is ill.

For fully understanding that,
the righteous life is lived.

Scents, friend, are ill.

For fully understanding that,
the righteous life is lived.

Nose-consciousness, friend, is ill.

For fully understanding that,
the righteous life is lived.

Nose-contact, friend, is ill.

For fully understanding that,
the righteous life is lived.

The weal or woe or neutral states experienced
that arise owing to nose-contact, -
those also are ill.

For fully understanding that,
the righteous life is lived.

Savours, friend, are ill.

For fully understanding that,
the righteous life is lived.

Tongue-consciousness, friend, is ill.

For fully understanding that,
the righteous life is lived.

Tongue-contact, friend, is ill.

For fully understanding that,
the righteous life is lived.

The weal or woe or neutral states experienced
that arise owing to tongue-contact, -
those also are ill.

For fully understanding that,
the righteous life is lived.

For fully understanding that,
the righteous life is lived.

Tangibles, friend, are ill.

For fully understanding that,
the righteous life is lived.

Body-consciousness, friend, is ill.

For fully understanding that,
the righteous life is lived.

Body-contact, friend, is ill.

For fully understanding that,
the righteous life is lived.

The weal or woe or neutral states experienced
that arise owing to body-contact, -
those also are ill.

For fully understanding that,
the righteous life is lived.

'The mind, friend, is ill.

For fully understanding that,
the righteous life is lived.

Mind-states, friend, are ill.

For fully understanding that,
the righteous life is lived.

Mind-consciousness, friend, is ill.

For fully understanding that,
the righteous life is lived.

Mind-contact, friend, is ill.

For fully understanding that,
the righteous life is lived.

The weal or woe or neutral states experienced
that arise owing to mind-contact, -
those also are ill.

For fully understanding that,
the righteous life is lived.
