Understanding (ii)
Thus have I heard:
The Exalted One once staying near Sāvatthī.
Then the Exalted One addressed the brethren, saying:
"Brethren."
"Lord," responded those brethren to the Exalted One.
The Exalted One thus spoke:
"By not comprehending,
by not understanding,
without detaching himself from,
without abandoning
objects,
one is incapable of the destruction of ill.
By not comprehending,
by not understanding,
without detaching himself from,
without abandoning
sounds,
one is incapable of the destruction of ill.
By not comprehending,
by not understanding,
without detaching himself from,
without abandoning
scents,
one is incapable of the destruction of ill.
By not comprehending,
by not understanding,
without detaching himself from,
without abandoning
savours,
one is incapable of the destruction of ill.
By not comprehending,
by not understanding,
without detaching himself from,
without abandoning
tangibles,
one is incapable of the destruction of ill.
By not comprehending,
by not understanding,
without detaching himself from,
without abandoning
mind-states,
one is incapable of the destruction of ill.
But by comprehending,
by understanding,
by detaching himself from,
by abandoning
objects,
one is capable of the destruction of ill.
By comprehending,
by understanding,
by detaching himself from,
by abandoning
sounds,
one is capable of the destruction of ill.
By comprehending,
by understanding,
by detaching himself from,
by abandoning
scents,
one is capable of the destruction of ill.
By comprehending,
by understanding,
by detaching himself from,
by abandoning
savours,
one is capable of the destruction of ill.
By comprehending,
by understanding,
by detaching himself from,
by abandoning
tangibles,
one is capable of the destruction of ill.
By comprehending,
by understanding,
by detaching himself from,
by abandoning
mind-states,
one is capable of the destruction of ill.
