Thus have I heard:

The Exalted One once staying near Sāvatthī.

Then the Exalted One addressed the brethren, saying:

"Brethren."

"Lord," responded those brethren to the Exalted One.

The Exalted One thus spoke:

"Apply yourselves, brethren, to solitude.

A brother who is solitary
knows things as they really are.

And how does he so know?

He knows, as it really is,
that the eye is impermanent.

He knows, as it really is,
that objects are impermanent.

He knows, as it really is,
that eye-consciousness is impermanent.

He knows, as it really is,
that eye-contact is impermanent.

The weal or woe or neutral state experienced,
which arises owing to eye-contact, -
that also he knows,
as it really is,
to be impermanent.

He knows, as it really is,
that the ear is impermanent.

He knows, as it really is,
that sounds are impermanent.

He knows, as it really is,
that ear-consciousness is impermanent.

He knows, as it really is,
that ear-contact is impermanent.

The weal or woe or neutral state experienced,
which arises owing to ear-contact, -
that also he knows,
as it really is,
to be impermanent.

that the nose is impermanent.

He knows, as it really is,
that scents are impermanent.

He knows, as it really is,
that nose-consciousness is impermanent.

He knows, as it really is,
that nose-contact is impermanent.

The weal or woe or neutral state experienced,
which arises owing to nose-contact, -
that also he knows,
as it really is,
to be impermanent.

that the tongue is impermanent.

He knows, as it really is,
that savours are impermanent.

He knows, as it really is,
that tongue-consciousness is impermanent.

He knows, as it really is,
that tongue-contact is impermanent.

The weal or woe or neutral state experienced,
which arises owing to tongue-contact, -
that also he knows,
as it really is,
to be impermanent.

that the body is impermanent.

He knows, as it really is,
that tangibles are impermanent.

He knows, as it really is,
that body-consciousness is impermanent.

He knows, as it really is,
that body-contact is impermanent.

The weal or woe or neutral state experienced,
which arises owing to body-contact, -
that also he knows,
as it really is,
to be impermanent.

that the mind is impermanent.

He knows, as it really is,
that mind-states are impermanent.

He knows, as it really is,
that mind-consciousness is impermanent.

He knows, as it really is,
that mind-contact is impermanent.

The weal or woe or neutral state experienced,
which arises owing to mind-contact, -
that also he knows,
as it really is,
to be impermanent.

Apply yourselves, brethren, to solitude.

A brother who is solitary
knows things as they really are."
