Thus have I heard:

The Exalted One was once staying near Sāvatthī, at Jeta Grove, in Anāthapiṇḍika's, Park.

Then the Exalted One addressed the brethren, saying:

"Brethren."

"Lord," responded those brethren to the Exalted One.

The Exalted One said:

By fully knowing,
by comprehending,
by detaching himself from,
by abandoning the all,
a man is capable of extinguishing ill.'

By fully knowing,
by comprehending,
by detaching himself from,
by abandoning what (all)
is a man capable of extinguishing ill?

By fully knowing,
by comprehending,
by detaching himself from,
by abandoning the eye
a man is capable of extinguishing ill.

By fully knowing,
by comprehending,
by detaching himself from,
by abandoning objects
a man is capable of extinguishing ill.

By fully knowing,
by comprehending,
by detaching himself from,
by abandoning eye-consciousness
a man is capable of extinguishing ill.
