The Fetter
Thus have I heard:
The Exalted One was once staying near Sāvatthī
at the Jeta Grove in Anāthapiṇḍika's Park.
And there the Exalted One addressed the brethren, saying:
"Brethren!"
"Master!" responded those brethren.
The Exalted One said:
"I will show you, brethren,
the things that make for bondage1
and the fetter.
Do ye Usten to it.
And what, brethren,
are the things that make for bondage,
and what is the fetter?
Body, brethren,
is a thing that makes for bondage.
The desire and lust of body
are the fetter of body.
Feeling, brethren,
is a thing that makes for bondage.
The desire and lust of feeling
are the fetter of body.
Perception, brethren,
is a thing that makes for bondage.
The desire and lust of perception
are the fetter of body.
The activities, brethren,
is a thing that makes for bondage.
The desire and lust of the activities
are the fetter of body.
Consciousness, brethren,
is a thing that makes for bondage.
The desire and lust of consciousness
are the fetter of body.
These, brethren, are called:
'The things that make for bondage'
and these are
'the fetters.'"
