Sutta 4

Ukkā

The Rich Gift

If anyone, brethren,
were to give a morning gift of a hundred ukkā's,
and the same at noon
and the same at eventide,
[177] or if anyone were to practise a morning heart of love,
a noontide heart of love,
an eventide heart of love,
even if it were as slight
as one pull at the cow's udder,1
this practice would be by far
the more fruitful of the two.

Wherefore, brethren, thus must ye train yourselves:
Liberation of the will through love
we will develop,
we will often practise it,
we will make it a vehicle and a base,
take our stand upon it,
store it up,
thoroughly set it going.

1 Gadduhana-mattam pi is so described in the Comy. 'Pulling just once the udder-teat of a cow.'
