Thus have I heard:

At Savatthī the Exalted One said:

"Monks, these nine thoughts,¹ when made become,
made much of,
are very fruitful and of great advantage,
merging and ending in the deathless.

What nine?

The thought of foulness,
of death,
of the repulsiveness of food,
of universal wretchedness,
of impermanence,
of ill in impermanence,
of no self in ill,
of renunciation,
of freedom from passion.

Monks, these nine thoughts,
when made become,
made much of,
are very fruitful and of great advantage,
merging and ending in the deathless."
