THUS have I heard:
Once the Exalted One was dwelling near Sāvatthī,
at Jeta Grove, in Anāthapiṇḍika's Park;
and there he addressed the monks, saying:
"Monks."
'Yes, lord,' they replied;
and the Exalted One said:
"Monks, not having (yet) visited,
it is not meet to visit
a family of sevenfold conduct,
nor having visited to sit down.
What seven?
Pleasantly2 they rise not,
pleasantly they salute not,
nor pleasantly offer a seat,
they hide it;
from much they give little,
from choice they give coarse food;
without respect they give,
not respectfully.
Verily, monks, it is not meet to visit a family
of this sevenfold conduct
nor having visited to sit down.

it is meet to visit
a family of sevenfold conduct,
or having visited to sit down.
What seven?
Pleasantly they rise,
pleasantly they salute,
pleasantly offer a seat,
they hide it not;
from much they give much,
from choice they give choice food;
with respect they give,
not disrespectfully.
Verily, monks, it is meet to visit a family
of this sevenfold conduct
or having visited to sit down.
