Thus have I heard:

Once the Exalted One was dwelling near Sāvatthī,
at Jeta Grove,
in Anāthapiṇḍika's Park.

There the Exalted One addressed the monks, saying:

"Monks."

"Yes, lord," they replied,
and the Exalted One said:

"Monks, cumbered by six conditions,
though one listen to Saddhamma,
he cannot become one
to enter the right way
of right things.

What six?

(By him)
his² mother's life has been taken,
his father's life has been taken,
an arahant's life has been taken,
the Tathāgata's blood has been drawn intentionally,
the Order embroiled,
he is weak in insight,
he is a witless dullard.

"Monks, cumbered by these six conditions,
though one listen to Saddhamma,
he cannot become one
to enter the right way
of right things.

But, monks, unencumbered by six conditions,
if one listen to Saddhamma,
he can become one
to enter the right way
of right things.'

What six?

(By him)
mother's life has not been taken,
his father's life has not been taken,
an arahant's life has not been taken,
the Tathāgata's blood has not been drawn intentionally,
the Order has not embroiled,
he is insightful,
he is not a witless dullard.

Monks, unencumbered by six conditions,
if one listen to Saddhamma,
he can become one
to enter the right way
of right things.'
