The Ills of a Recluse

Thus have I heard:

Once the Exalted One dwelt near Sāvatthī;
and there he addressed the monks, saying:

"Monks."

'Yes, lord,' they replied;
and the Exalted One said:

"Monks, these are the five ills of a recluse.

What five?

Herein, monks, he is not content with any robe
he is not content with any alms,
he is not content with any lodging,
he is not content with any medicament,
and he finds no delight in leading the godly life.

Verily, monks, these are the five.

Monks, these are the five comforts of a recluse.¹
