The Clan-Goer

Thus have I heard:

Once the Exalted One dwelt near Sāvatthī;
and there he addressed the monks, saying:

"Monks."

'Yes, lord,' they replied; and the Exalted One said:

"Monks, pursuing five courses
a clan-going monk becomes among clan folk
neither dear
nor loved
nor revered
nor what he ought to become.

What five?

He is intimate with those who are unfamiliar;¹
interfering without warrant;²
frequents the society of³ dissenters;
whispers⁴ in the ear;
and asks too much.

[106] Monks. pursuing these five courses
a clan-going monk becomes among clan folk
neither dear
nor loved
nor revered
nor what he ought to become.

"Monks, pursuing five courses
a clan-going monk becomes among clan folk
dear
loved
revered
and what he ought to become.

What five?

He is not intimate with those who are unfamiliar;
not interfering without warrant;
does not frequent the society of dissenters;
does not whisper in the ear;
and does not ask too much.

Monks, pursuing these five courses
a clan-going monk becomes among clan folk
dear
loved
revered
and what he ought to become.

² Comy. being no lord, he apportions as a lord, saying, Give this, take that. P.E.D. intentioning unruliness (?).
