Thus have I heard:

Once the Exalted One dwelt near Sāvatthī;
and there he addressed the monks, saying:

"Monks."

'Yes, lord,' they replied; and the Exalted One said:

"Monks, possessed of five things
a monk is worthy of offerings,
worthy of gifts,
worthy of oblations,
meet to be reverently saluted,
the world's unsurpassed field for merit.

Of what five?

Herein, monks, a monk has achieved virtue,
concentration,
insight,
emancipation
and the knowledge and vision
of emancipation.

[104] Verily, monks, possessed of these five things
a monk is worthy of offerings,
worthy of gifts,
worthy of oblations,
meet to be reverently saluted,
the world's unsurpassed field for merit.'
