Saṅgaha-Vatthu Suttaṃ

Sympathy1

[253]

Thus have I heard:

On a certain occasion the Exalted One was staying near Sāvatthī.

Then the Exalted One addressed the monks, saying:

"Monks."

"Yes, lord," they replied,
and the Exalted One said:

"Monks, there are these four bases of sympathy.

What four?

Charity,
kind speech,
doing a good turn,
and treating all alike.

These are the four bases of sympathy.'

1 As above, § 32 (in gāthas). At Dial. iii, 145 rendered 'popularity.'
