Thus have I heard:

On a certain occasion the Exalted One addressed the monks, saying:

"Monks."

"Yes, lord," they replied,
and the Exalted One said:

"Monks, these four modes of speech are Ariyan.

What four?

Speaking of things seen as seen,
of things heard as heard,
of things sensed as sensed,
speaking of things cognized as cognized.'

"Monks, these four modes of speech are Ariyan.
