Taking Life

[234]

Thus have I heard:

On a certain occasion the Exalted One was staying near Sāvatthī.

Then the Exalted One addressed the monks, saying:

"Monks."

"Yes, lord," they replied,
and the Exalted One said:

"Monks, possessing four qualities
one is put into purgatory
according to his deserts.

What four?

Taking life,
stealing,
wrong conduct in sense-desires
falsehood.

These are the four.

§

Monks, possessing four qualities
one is put into heaven
according to his deserts.

What four?

Abstaining from taking life,
abstaining from stealing,
abstaining from wrong conduct in sense-desires
abstaining from falsehood.

These are the four."
