Stirring Emotion¹

Thus have I heard:

On a certain occasion the Exalted One was staying near Sāvatthī.

Then the Exalted One addressed the monks, saying:

"Monks."

"Yes, lord," they replied, and the Exalted One said:

"Monks, these four places
are to be looked upon by a believing clansman
with feelings of emotion.

What four?

At the thought:

Here the Tathāgata was born,
the believing clansman should look
with feelings of emotion.

At the thought:

Here the Tathāgata was enlightened with supreme enlightenment,
the believing clansman should look
with feelings of emotion.

At the thought:

Here the Tathāgata set rolling the supreme Dhamma-wheel,
the believing clansman should look
with feelings of emotion.

At the thought:

Here the Tathāgata was utterly released in the Nibbāna-state
wherein nought remains behind,
the believing clansman should look
with feelings of emotion.

These are the four places
to be looked upon by a believing clansman
with feelings of emotion."
