Thus have I heard:

On a certain occasion the Exalted One was staying near Sāvatthī.

Then the Exalted One addressed the monks, saying:

"Monks."

"Yes, lord," replied those monks to the Exalted One.

The Exalted One said:

"Monks, there are these four perfections.

What four?

Perfection of virtue,
perfection of concentration,
perfection of wisdom
perfection of release.

Monks, there are these four perfections.

What four?

Perfection of bodily form,
perfection of feeling,
perfection of perception
perfection of becoming.²

These are the four perfections.'

¹ Text has angāni for aggāni of Comy. and Sinh. text, but is right in the uddāna.

² Bhav'aggaṃ. Comy. takes this and the foregoing to be 'the personality' in which one attains arahantship (uttama-sarīra).
