Sutta 64

Niraya Suttaṃ

Purgatory1

THUS have I heard:

On a certain occasion the Exalted One addressed the monks, saying:

"Monks."

"Yes, lord," replied those monks to the Exalted One.

The Exalted One said:

What four?

He is one who takes life,
steals,
is a wrong-doer in sensual desires,
he is a liar.

These are the four qualities possessed of which one is put into purgatory according to his deserts.

To kill, to steal, to lie, — these three, and going
After another's wife the wise commend not.'2
