THUS HAVE I HEARD

Once the Exalted One was dwelling near Sāvatthī.

Then the Exalted One addressed the monks, saying:

"Monks!"

"Yes, lord," replied those monks to the Exalted One.

The Exalted One said:

"Monks, one possessed of three qualities
is put into Purgatory according to his deserts.

What three?

One is himself an idle babbler,
he encourages another in idle babble,
he approves of idle babbling.

Possessed of these three qualities
one is put into Purgatory according to his deserts.

Monks, one possessed of three qualities
is put into heaven according to his deserts.

What three?

He himself abstains from idle babbling,
he encourages another to abstain from idle babbling,
he approves of abstaining from idle babbling.

Possessed of these three qualities
is put into heaven according to his deserts."
