THUS HAVE I HEARD

Once the Exalted One was dwelling near Sāvatthī.

Then the Exalted One addressed the monks, saying:

"Monks!"

"Yes, lord," replied those monks to the Exalted One.

The Exalted One said:

"Monks, one possessed of three qualities
is put into Purgatory according to his deserts.

What three?

One is himself a speaker of falsehoods,
he encourages another in falsehood,
he approves of falsehood.

Possessed of these three qualities
one is put into Purgatory according to his deserts.

Monks, one possessed of three qualities
is put into heaven according to his deserts.

What three?

He himself abstains from falsehoods,
he encourages another to abstain from falsehood,
he approves of abstaining from falsehood.

Possessed of these three qualities
is put into heaven according to his deserts."
