Nikkhitto Niraye Suttaṃ (c)

Put into Purgatory (c)

[276]

THUS HAVE I HEARD

Once the Exalted One was dwelling near Sāvatthī.

Then the Exalted One addressed the monks, saying:

"Monks!"

"Yes, lord," replied those monks to the Exalted One.

The Exalted One said:

"Monks, one possessed of three qualities
is put into Purgatory according to his deserts.

What three?

One is himself wrongdoer in sensual desires,
he encourages another in wrong practice in sensual desires,
he approves of wrong practice in sensual desires.

Possessed of these three qualities
one is put into Purgatory according to his deserts.

§

Monks, one possessed of three qualities
is put into heaven according to his deserts.

What three?

He himself abstains from wrong practice in sensual desires,
he encourages another to abstain from wrong practice in sensual desires,
he approves of abstaining from wrong practice in sensual desires.

Possessed of these three qualities
is put into heaven according to his deserts."
